The history of Shimoda
Shimoda holds great historical significance. In 1854, during the Edo period when Japan was in a state of isolation, a pivotal event took place. The Peace Treaty between Japan and the United States was established, leading to the arrival of Commodore Perry on an American black ship at Shimoda. This momentous occasion marked the opening of Japan to the world and shaped its future.
In front of the station, a replica of one of the black ships greets you. It commemorates the significant event when four black ships arrived in Shimoda, urging Japan to open its doors to the world.
As you explore the city, you'll notice a blend of Roman and Japanese retro atmospheres. The characters and icons most associated with Shimoda are that of Commodore Perry and the Black Ships.
Sail on a black ship
Embark on a remarkable journey aboard the USS Susquehanna, a black cruise ship meticulously crafted to resemble Perry's historic vessel. Sail along the picturesque Izu Sea, reveling in its breathtaking beauty and the coastal atmosphere; you can even catch a glimpse of the Shimoda Aquarium. This cruise lasts for approximately 20 minutes.

Alongside the beach, you'll find memorials that commemorate the opening of Japan and honor Commodore Perry. As you stroll through this area, you can immerse yourself in history while appreciating the scenic beauty of the beach.
Get a close look at marine life at Shimoda Aquarium
Don't miss out on visiting Shimoda Aquarium (下田海中水族館). Established in 1967, the aquarium has captivated visitors over the years. The dolphin show and dolphin feeding point are particularly popular. With over 10,000 sea creatures from up to 50 different species, you'll encounter a diverse array of marine life. Keep an eye out for rare sea creatures too.
At the entrance of the aquarium, you'll be greeted by a remarkable centenarian: a giant turtle.
Built using the natural coves of Shimoda Bay, the aquarium is a floating dome with glass windows on the lower level. Rather than being confined to tanks, most of the aquatic animals reside in the open sea. This setup allows them to thrive in their natural habitat and maintain a stress-free environment.
You can enjoy feeding dolphins, getting up close and personal with these playful creatures, or take a boat ride in the dolphin area.
