Morioka Handi-Works Square

Morioka Handi-Works Square is a popular sightseeing facility that is representative of Morioka city, the capital of Iwate prefecture. Here, you can learn about traditional techniques of artifacts, folk craft items and food of Morioka. In Morioka Handi-Works Square, first-class craftsmen from 15 studios in 11 industries create works. You can also see work with traditional techniques up close, and create your original work as craftsmen lecture about crafting. Not only crafts are made in this facility, but they also sell 4,000 kinds of local crafts and over 3,500 kinds of souvenirs of Morioka. You can fully enjoy the appeal of Morioka in this facility.

Traditional old architecture of Morioka

The building of Nanbu Magari-ya zone captures people's interest in the facility. This building is called Nanbu Magari-ya and this is a 200-year old traditional building in Morioka. Since they exhibit agricultural tools from back in the days and "Irori," Japanese traditional fire place, inside you may feel as if you have been transported to those days.

Exhibition selling local items

Morioka Regional Industry Promotion Center Zone is located near the entrance. In this zone, they sell craft works created in this facility, other local items, and over 3,500 kinds of souvenirs of Morioka including locally-made alcohol, confections, Nanbu-tekki, ironware unique to Nanbu area, and dyed textiles. Of the souvenirs, Nanbu-senbei, rice crackers, the representative item in Morioka is very popular.

Popular handcraft workshop

In Studio zone, you can see the craftsman creating works with traditional techniques up close. In this area, you can also experience creating your original pottery, dyed textiles and wooden crafts as you are being lectured by craftsmen. Since they have workshops of Reimen, cold noodles, one of the famous dishes of Morioka, and Nanbu-senbei, you can eat freshly made ones.
