Tsukiji Hongwanji

(Source : )
Tsukiji Hongwanji is a Jodo Shinshu Buddhist temple. The main hall was damaged by the great Kanto earthquake; however, in 1934, it was rebuilt as an ancient Indian-style stone building. Its characteristics are the staircase and stained glass that resemble those of a palace and its pipe organs. The temple has an exotic feel to it, with carvings representing animals and unique motifs found in various corners. People of different religions might not find frequent opportunities for a visit; however, this is an attractive spot worth visiting just to see the unique decorations.

Animal Motifs

Many animal sculptures are seen in the precincts including lions that look like sphinx, birds, cows, monkeys and elephants that are also familiar to Japanese temples; these motifs also appear frequently in Buddhist teachings and characters considered sacred in India and China. How about having some fun looking for animals in an exotic, foreign atmosphere?
