Town with many slopes
The main sightseeing area in Onomichi is the streets between Kaigan-dori (coast road) along the shoreline of the Seto Inland Sea and Senkoji-yama that is 144 meters high. The intertwined paved slopes reminds visitors of the good old Showa era. Among those slopes, Senkoji Shinmichi has especially great view that often appears in posters to promote sightseeing. Enjoy strolling while you see the stunning view of the Seto Inland Sea.

Path of Cats
Among many slopes in Onomichi, some of them are somehow inhabited with a lot of cats. That is neko no hosomichi (path of cats). At first, it was only that cats gathered there spontaneously. Then it became famous online and now there are cat ornaments everywhere as the path attracts many cat lovers. There is even a museum of Manekineko (welcoming cat) in a renovated old, traditional residence.

Senkoji Park
The area around Mt. Senkoji is called Senkoji Park. There is an observatory deck on top of the mountain, Senko-ji as a landmark of Onomichi, Onomichi City Museum of art and so on. Senkoji Ropeway operates between the foot of the mountain and the top and serves as a convenient way to get to Senkoji Park, which is also known as a good viewing spot of cherry blossoms in spring.

Senko-ji
Senko-ji is a temple believed to be founded in 806. The main hall was built as if a part of it is jutting out over the slope of Mt. Senkoji. Therefore, it has a great view of the islands in the Seto Inland Sea. The red and white marriage charm is for couples to keep the matching one with each other. Some people visit here to pray for a good match.

Kaiunto
Kaiunto stands on the way from Kaigan-dori (coast road) to Mt. Senkoji. The 25-meter-tall, three-storied pagoda was originally five-storied when it was built in 1388. The top two were removed in 1692 and it has been as it is today since then. The best way to appreciate it is to walk up the slope and look at it down below. A unique viewing angle!

Onomichi Ramen
If you go to Onomichi, you must try the local specialty, Onomichi Ramen. The soup is made using seafood of the Seto Inland Sea by adding some soy sauce in it. This plain soup matches the thin noodles very well. The most recommended place to try this is “Onomichi Ramen Tani” in the JR Onomichi station building. Juicy roasted pork, noodles and soup all go extremely well together.

Onomichi-Tomonoura Cruise
Onomichi-Tomonoura Cruise operated by Setouchi Cruising connects Onomichi and Tomonoura, the popular sightseeing spot. It operates from Onomichi station to Senkoji, then arrives at Tomonoura in about 1 hour. The fee for an adult is 2,200 yen, 1,100 yen for a child. The scenery of Onomichi seen from the boat is particularly fine.
