Miho no Matsubara stretches straight from the peninsula of Suruga bay to Mount Fuji, and it is like a pine tree bridge toward Mount Fuji. So many artists were moved by this landscape and created paintings and literary works. Among them, Ukiyo-e by Utagawa Hiroshige who influenced artists abroad is especially famous. He created two artworks which used Miho no Matsubara as a motif.

This pine tree is famous for the Hagoromo legend. In the legend, a female angel hung her hagoromo, Japanese thin robe, on the pine tree. This legend is played in Kabuki and Japanese traditional dance. This 3rd generation pine tree succeeded the 2nd generation which lived for 650 years. Now the fluffy pines are growing strong.

It is said that God descended on the pine tree of Hagoromo, and walked through this “Road of God.” This is about a 500-meter-long road with 200 to 400-year-old pine trees on both sides. You can enjoy the information plates along the road that tells you about the songs and stories related to Miho no Matsubara. We also recommend visiting here at night when the place is lit up beautifully.
