Matsumoto Castle

(Source : pixta)
Matsumoto Castle, a symbol of Matsumoto city, that has stood the test of time is gracefully silhouetted with the Northern Alps and Utsukushi-ga-hara Highlands in the background. The castle is estimated to have been built in around 1593, in the Age of Civil Wars, and is the oldest existent nationally-treasured castle. In the civil war era, most of the castles were built in the mountains for strategic reasons. It was uncommon to build a castle on a flat site like Matsumoto Castle. The castle has a beautiful contrast between black and white, and promises great photos from any angle. You will be impressed by the history of this castle that spans over 400 years.

Black Castle Tower

The highlight is certainly the castle tower (tenshu). It retains almost the same appearance as when it was built in 1500. The lord of this castle, Ishikawa clan, was serving the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi. All of the Hideyoshi's castles were black, so it is said that this black castle is a symbol of Ishikawa's loyalty to Hideyoshi.

Interior of the Castle Tower

The castle tower displays armor, matchlock guns and tools for making bullets. There are various measures and traps that defend the castle throughout the tower, such as the throwing of rocks on top of the enemy who are climbing the stone walls called "ishi-otoshi" and the narrow and steep staircases to repel the enemy's advance.
