Kumejima

(Source : )
Kumejima is an island located 100 km off the west coast of the main island of Okinawa. In 1983, the natural beauty of Kumejima was officially recognized and the entire island was labeled a prefectural nature park. One of the most famous sites of the island is the pure white sandy uninhabited island appearing to be floating right off the eastern side of Kumejima called Hateno Beach. With its remarkable contrast of white and blue, this small island is sought out by large number of visitors every year. This wonderful island has tons of sites to see including various beautiful beaches, striking views of pine trees designated as national natural monuments, wonderful island cuisine, and so on.

Vast array of natural beaches

Many natural beaches can be found on Kumejima. The most famous of which is Hateno Beach which is a 7 km long pure white sandy beach surrounded by the beautiful blue views of the ocean and sky. We also recommend the other long beaches of Eff Beach and Ara Beach.

Eff Beach

Located on the eastern side of Kumejima is Eff Beach which is counted as one of the top 100 beaches in Japan for its silky white sand that covers the 2 km long beach. The water is shallow allowing for soft lapping waves which make it perfect for a swimming area and marine sports. Around the beach are delicious restaurants and resort hotels, so the beach is always booming with visitors.

Highlights filled adventures on foot

Aside from beaches, Kumejima also has a lot to offer with beautiful walks. While exploring the island, you can find lots of natural mysteries like the nationally recognized natural monument of the “Five Root Tree”, the “Tatami Rocks” which look like a vast floor of turtle shells, and “Ghost Road” which will make you wonder if you’re going up or down.

View spots

Located around Kumejima are also many spots offering fantastic views. The Hiyajo Cliff Overlook offers great views of the surrounding islands, and from atop of the highest point of the island at the Uegusuku Castle Ruins located at an elevation of 310 m you can enjoy looking down on the entirety of Kumejima.

Kumejima Museum

This cultural facility allows one to get in touch with the nature, history, culture, and folk traditions of Kumejima. The museum is separated into different sections focusing on, “Natural Wonders of Kumejima,” “Change through Time,” “Legacies of Kumejima,” and “Life on Kumejima.” (Adults 200 yen)

Island specialty: Kurume-ebi Shrimp

Kumejima is the largest producer of kuruma-ebi shrimp in Japan. Because of this you can find delicious meals all over the island with juicy kuruma-ebi shrimp. One of the most famous dishes is the “Kuruma-ebi Dog”, whose flavor is slightly different in every restaurant, so we recommend trying a bunch to find which one tastes best to you.
