(Source : )
This extravagant festival, Hachinohe Sansha Taisai (three-shirine festival), has a long history and tradition. The festival is designated as the nation's Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Three mikoshi (portable shrines) from three shrines and 27 floats that are based on folklore and scenes from kabuki (traditional Japanese play) are on display. The magnificent floats measure up to 10 m in height and 8 m in width. The spectators applaud for every float that passes by. The floats are lit up at night, and they beautifully stand out against a dark background of the night sky. The majestic scene brings more excitement to the city. This is a very large festival that draws over one million people during the festival period.
