Near to Hakodate’s popular tourist spot, Goryokaku, is the main branch of the grilled chicken and seafood izakaya (Japanese-style pub), Nitchome, where you can taste authentic char-grilled chicken and fresh seafood produced in Hakodate. Because you can order your seafood directly from the large fish tank inside the store, the level of freshness is excellent! Also, the seafood used is freshly caught everyday by the shopkeeper, who has acquired the qualification of Hakodate Squid Meister. This qualification is given to those who have a wide range of knowledge about Hakodate’s speciality squid. You can also try various other izakaya dishes, including grilled chicken. This restaurant is popular amongst both men, women, and old and young alike.

Inside the shop’s large fish tank are over 10 varieties of seafood from Hakodate which are caught by the shop owner himself. Also, the meat used comes fresh from the production sites of the Hokkaido meat brands Tokachi Ushi, Yakumo Buta and Shiretokodori directly to the store, supporting local production and consumption.

Starting from 680 yen, the lunch menu is great value. One highly recommended dish is the Katsu Ika Toge Teishoku, or the Fresh Squid Sashimi set meal (980 yen), which uses special squid freshly caught by the shop owner himself who knows a lot about Hakodate squid. Using squid that was swimming until moments before being eaten means that the level of freshness is excellent, as is the texture of its clear body!

The Kaisen set (3,000 yen) is extremely popular with tourists and allows customers to fish for their own squid from tanks inside the store. As well as being able to eat the squid you catch yourself, this set also comes with abalone, scallops and surf clam oysters meaning you can have your fill of Hakodate seafood all at once.
