Gokanosho Heike no Sato

During Heian period, when powerful Heike clans lost at a civil war called, "Genpei war" and hid in the isolated areas all over the country, those clans were called, "Heike-no-ochiudo". This "Gokanosho" was the biggest area of all the hidden places. At the "Heike no Sato", you can see legends of fallen clans related to this place at the Museum "Heike Legendary Museum". You can also see a  vermillion-laquared "Noh theater" from prosperous period and folk houses with thatched roof. On top of that, there are various restaurant, where you can enjoy dishes made of wild plants or handmade soba. You shouldn't miss "Momigi suspension bridge" on the stream in the deep mountain, just in front of Gokanosho.

Two waterfalls

Sendantodoroki waterfall is a branch of Kuma river, which is also a legendary place of Heika in Gokanoso. It is a famous waterfall in Kyusyu, chosen as one of Japan’s 100 waterfalls. Another waterfall is called Umenokitodoroki. It is a beautiful waterfall measuring 38 m high. It was called miracle waterfall for a long time, because it was situated at the steep valley.

Landmark of Gokanoso, Momigi suspension bridge

The upper bridge, called “Ayatori bridge” measures 72 m long and 35 m high. The lower bridge, called “Shakunage bridge” measures 59 m long and 17 m high. There are many suspension bridges at the valley of Gokanoso. In autumn, you can look down and see beautiful autumn colors of leaves from those bridges.

Folk house built more than 200 years ago and a restaurant where you can have meals made of wild plants

At the entrance of Okanoso Heike no Sato, you will see thatched roofed folk houses, that are built more than 200 years ago. On top of that, there are restaurants where you can have handmade soba and meals made of wild plants. Those are best places to have lunch after visiting historical site.
