Fukuoka Castle Ruins

(Source : )
Fukuoka Castle is noted in connection with Kanbei Kuroda who is a legendary general. He served the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The son of Kanbei, Nagamasa, built this castle. It was a magnificent castle at the time. Now, the main castle tower is gone, but the Important Cultural Properties: Tamon Yagura (observatory tower), Otemon (gate) and Shiomi Yagura (turret) remain to tell us the history. The ruins of the castle are maintained as Maizuru Park, and it is open to the public. There also used to be an observation tower (Dai-Tenshu-dai) on the hill. The Fukuoka Dome and Fukuoka Tower can be seen from there. The castle resembles a flying crane when you see it from the Hakata Bay side, so it is also called "Maizuru-jo" or Dancing Crane Castle.

Kanbei Kuroda

Kanbei Kuroda served the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi as an adviser and demonstrated his abilities in making strategic plans and in negotiating with feudal lords. Hideyoshi said of Kanbei "If I gave him one million koku (a unit that measures financial power), he would reign over the country right away." Although he was a gifted strategist and had been showing an  outstanding performance in his career, he gave up all of his domain and retired to protect the Kuroda family because he knew that the warlord Tokugawa Ieyasu had a doubt about his loyalty.

Tamon Yagura Tower

At one time, there were 47 observation towers, but now only Tamon Yagura remains untouched as from the day it was build. It is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property as an architectural structure of the Edo period. The current 40 towers are not original as they were rebuilt about 40 years ago. The long wall contains 16 rooms.

Observation Tower

There is an observation deck on the hill as you enter through the Kurogane-gomon Gate and the surrounding stone walls. The main observation tower (Dai-tenshu-dai) of this castle used to stand in this location. You have a 360-degree panoramic view from here, and a stunning view of Fukuoka Tower and the Fukuoka Dome as well.

Illumination

In the Maizuru Park, where the Fukuoka Castle is located, about 1,000 cherry trees bloom in the spring. The Fukuoka Castle Cherry Blossom Festival is held annually in late March through early April. The castle ruins and the cherry trees are lit up at night. There are food stalls for you to enjoy the beautifully illuminated castle while dining.

Famous for Cherry Blossoms

Fukuoka Castle draws many visitors for the cherry blossoms in the spring. It is a popular destination due to close proximity to the downtown area, the expansive estate and well-maintained environment. The cherry trees near the castle create a stunning tunnel of cherry blossoms when they are in full bloom. Many other plants, such as red and white plum blossoms, peonies and lotus flowers also highlight the park.
