Uchimura Kanzo Memorial Stone Church

Uchimura Kanzo Memorial Stone Church is a church established based on the philosophy of Kanzo Uchimura, a Japanese Christian Philosopher. The building above ground is a church and a memorial hall for Uchimura Kanzo is located beneath it. The building designed by an American architect Kendrick Kellogg has a unique shape with the stone and glass arch. Kellogg is known as an innovator of organic architecture and his design makes good use of nature itself. It is given high reputation as a design that matches well to the nature-rich Karuizawa.

Church without a Cross

The philosophy of Uchimura Kanzo is based on the non-church movement, “where you pray is the church.” Therefore, there is no cross in this church. Please feel Uchimura’s concept that aimed to find one’s own self without any restriction in nature.

Fantastic Light Up

The church is closed at 18:00, but it is lit up and enjoyed from outside at night. The light leaking from the glass arch is so fantastic that it gives off a different feeling from daytime. It makes you feel even more serene in your mind.
