Miyanoura-dake

Miyanoura-dake is located in almost the center of Yakushima. It is 1,936 m high and is the highest mountain in Kyushu and was selected as one of the best 100 mountains in Japan. It is made of granite and you can find strange-shaped stones around the peak which were weathered or corroded. From the peak, you can get a 360-degree view of Sata -misaki, Kaimon-dake, Kuchinoerabu-jima, Tanega-shima on a sunny day as well as the mountains in Yakushima.

Observation deck on Koban-dake

On the peak of 1,711 m high Koban-dake, there is a big rock which seems like tofu with a cut. So it is called as Tofu rock and is one of the must-see spots in Miyanoura-dake trekking.

Yakushima rhododendron

Yakushima rhododendron is said to be the queen among flowers in Yakushima. These are precious flowers which live only in 1,500 m and above in the highlands in Yakushima. Deep pink-colored and dome-shaped buds compose a cluster and each bud grows and becomes a big pink flower. The color changes from light pink to pure white.

Various strange-shaped rocks

Miyanoura-dake has a lot of strange-shaped rocks. Especially, Tofu rock on Koban-dake and many strange-shaped rocks on Nageishi-daira are famous. Other examples are Genkotsu-iwa, trio rocks on Okina-dake, trio rocks on Kurio-dake, and Bozu-iwa.

A view from the peak of Miyanoura-dake

Miyanoura-dake is located in almost the center of Yakushima. From the highest peak in Kyushu, you can get a 360-degree scenic beauty including that of the sea. You will see not only mountains on the island but also a view outside of the island such as Kaimon-dake, Sata-misaki, and Tanega-shima on a sunny day.
