Meigetsu-in, a temple founded in 1160 is known as “hydrangea temple.” 2500 hydrangeas in blue, purple and white are in full bloom around the middle of June every year. Especially, the blue hydrangea is called “Meigetsu-in Blue.” The Hojo (abbot’s chamber) in the garden has a round-shaped window called “enlightenment window” through which the magnificent garden can be seen. The scenery varying with seasons is graceful and artistic. This is the world you can only see here.

Two Japanese Gardens

Meigetsu-in has two gardens. One is Karesansui garden in front, and the other is an inner garden behind the main hall. The meticulously groomed Karesansui garden is spectacular. The inner garden is not usually opened to public. Although all you can get is the view from the round window of Hojo (abbot’s chamber), the view is breathtaking.
