Kuroshio no Mori Mangrove Park

Kuroshio no Mori Mangrove Park is situated next to an old-growth forest of mangrove. There is an observation deck that overlooks the mangrove forest, Mangrove-kan (resource center), a pier for mangrove canoes as well as a large garden. This is the second largest mangrove forest in Japan. There are rare animals that inhabit only this forest and animals that are unique to a mangrove forest. Most of the facilities in the park require an admission fee, but there are also free facilities, such as local specialty shops and a recreation plaza.

Overlooking the Mangrove Forest from the Observation Deck

The entire mangrove forest can been seen from the observation deck that is located deep in the park. You can observe the deep green forest and its rich ecological system from there. You will also see mountains and rivers of the Amami region in the distance that were formed in a unique way.

Mangrove Canoe

Visitors can explore in the mangrove forest on a mangrove canoe. The tour gives you a one-hour excursion through the forest with an instructor. You can experience going through a mangrove tunnel which is accessible only at high tide. You can also walk through tidal pools and look for creatures at low tide.

Mangrove Resource Center

At Mangrove-kan, visitors can learn about the mangrove forest and its inhabitants as well as the ecosystem in Sumiyoshi-cho where the forest is located. There is also a display of Ryukyu Ayu (sweetfish) that inhabits only this area.

Access

Take Shima bus from Amami Oshima Airport to Naze (west cast)-55 minutes. Transfer at the last stop to Shima bus bound for Koniya to Mangrove Park-30 minutes. 3-min walk from the bus stop.
