Kanagi

Kanagi is the area located northwest of Aomori prefecture. The town used to be called Kanagimachi, but because of the amalgamation of Goshogawara city with Shiura Mura in 2005, the name of the town doesn’t exist anymore. This town is famous as the hometown of Dazai Osamu, a Japanese representative novelist. Kanagi is also a birthplace of Tsugaru-jamisen (Japanese string instrument), so this is popular as a sightseeing spot. Spend an exceptional time amidst beautiful nature where cherry blossoms bloom in spring and snow blows in the wind in winter.

Kayabuki minka: good traditional houses

In Kanagi, many Kayabuki minka, houses that have a ceiling made with Japanese torreya, remain and creates a landscape unique to old Japan. The ceiling made with natural materials is very functional, it keeps the house cool in summer and warm in winter. Good old traditional houses, not typical of the big city, is one of the appeals of Kanagi.
