Kamikochi

Surrounded by the summits of Northern Japanese Alps, Kamikochi is a highland at an altitude of 1500 m. Many mountaineers come here every year before climbing the Northern Alps. Since an English mountaineer Walter Weston shared information on this place with the world in the 1880s, it became a famous mountain resort. It also obtained 2 stars in the French guide book "Michelin" in 2008. Recognized as a National Cultural Property (National Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument), the view is just breathtaking.

Golden autumn leaves

You shouldn't miss the autumn leaves in Kamikochi. In the beginning of October, katsura trees and silver birch trees start to change the color of its leaves. From the middle to the end of October, larch trees turn golden. It is a sign that the season will change soon. The surface of ponds reflects the warm colors of the leaves. It is breathtaking and beautiful.

Kappabashi

In the center of Kamikochi, Kappabashi is a well-known wooden bridge 3.1 m wide and 36.6 m long. It is also a popular spot for taking pictures; from the bridge, you get a view of the mountains including Mt. Hodaka and Mt. Yakedake, and Azusa River.

Spiritual place: Myojin-ike

As you walk about one hour on the left bank of the Azusa river upstream from Kappabashi, you will reach a pond called Myojin-ike. It has one big and one small pond. By the edge of the ponds, a shrine Hodaka Jinja Okumiya stands peacefully. It feels spiritual as the transparent water does not freeze even in winter.

Tashiro-ike

Inside the preserved forest, there is a shallow pond in the middle of the wetland, which looks like a hole inside the forest. It looks bright and calm as a rice field. Tashiro-ike is beautiful in all seasons: it is surrounded by new green leaves from spring to summer, autumn leaves in fall and frosted leaves at the end of fall. You can spend some relaxing and quiet moments here.

Taisho-ike

When Mt. Yakedake erupted in 1915 and this pond was created by the huge quantity of erupted mud blocking the river. Many trees were also destroyed by the rushing water, resulting in an area which is now filled with morning mist. This mythical and beautiful view became popular and is presented in media as one of the great views of Kamikochi.

Take a 65-min bus ride on the Alpico Kotsu bus from Shinshimashima Station in the direction of Kamikochi. Get off at Kamikochi stop followed by a 6-min walk to Kappabashi
