Godaido

(Source : PhotoAC)
Matsushima is one of the top three Japanese scenic beauties. The main tourist spot here is Godaido, standing on the beautiful island of Godaido-jima. It is a small temple governed by the national treasure Zuigan-ji (temple) and received its name because it enshrines the Godai-Myou-o (five great kings) inside. The building was made in the Momoyama architectural style from about 500 years ago and it is registered as an important cultural heritage. The island Godaido-jima, on which Godaido stands, is connected to land by a red bridge with a grid floor called Sukashi-bashi. The ocean is visible from underneath and it is a pretty thrilling bridge.

Sukashi-bashi

It is said that the Sukashi-bashi, which is the only means to get to Godaido, was built purposely in a way that the ocean below is visible, so as to put the temple visitors in a concentrated state of mind. It is also called the "match-making bridge," because when a girl and a boy cross together they will hold hands out of fear.

Building with a Rare Momoyama Architecture

The current hall was built in 1604 by Masamune Date, Sendai's ruler in the Edo period. The architectural structure itself has a lot of highlights such as the roof, constructed in a style called Hogyo-zukuri, and the zodiac animals carved into all four walls. The Godai-Myou-o enshrined inside are opened to the public once in every 33 years, with the next time projected to be in 2039.
