Engaku-ji

Engaku-ji is was founded in 1282 as a Rinzai sect head temple Engaku-ji temple. It was founded by Tokimune Hojo who actually ruled the Kamakura Bakufu. The large precincts (about 60,000 sq. m) have major temple buildings like the main gate, sanmon gate, and Butsu-den (main hall) standing in a straight line. The famous writers including Soseki Natsume and Toson Shimazaki practiced Zen here and also wrote about it in their works. The exquisite scenery is added even more charm by hydrangeas in summer and colorful leaves in autumn. It is an ancient temple that provides an atmosphere of both solemnity and calm at the same time.

Shari-den

Shari-den is the only building in Kamakura that is designated as a national treasure. It is considered to be built in the 15th century. It is located in the premises of Shozoku-in where monks get together from all over Japan for training. It is usually not open to public except for from November 1st to 3rd, and the three days of New Year.

Biggest Bell in Kanto Area

The great bell in Engaku-ji is as tall as 259.5 cm and said to be the largest of all the many temple bells in the Kanto area. It is designated as a national treasure along with Shari-den. It stands at the top of a steep staircase. It is believed to be built in 1301.

Butsu-den (Main Hall)

Butsu-den (Main Hall) enshrines the principal image of Buddha, the seated wooden statue of Hokan Shaka Nyorai. It was damaged by the great Kanto earthquake of 1923 and rebuilt 40 years later. The "white dragon" is painted on the ceiling of Butsu-den.

Kojirin is the hall for Zen meditation. They have free Zen meditation sessions twice a day on Saturdays. Take this chance if you are interested. Kojirin is colored with hydrangeas in summer and red and yellow leaves in autumn.

Engaku-ji is a well-known viewing spot of autumn leaves in Kamakura along with Kencho-ji. Various kind of trees have beautiful red and yellow leaves. Those colorful leaves can be seen everywhere in the large premises of Engaku-ji from the gate to the backyard.
