Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island, is rich in seafood, and a place where you can experience the freshest and most delicious produce in Japan. In this feature, we talk about Nemuro Hanamaru, one of the three major kaiten-zushi (conveyor-belt sushi) restaurants in Hokkaido.

The restaurant was first established in the fishing village of Nemuro in Hokkaido but has gradually expanded to different parts of Hokkaido and even has branches in Tokyo.

Interestingly, orders are placed in the traditional way - with pen and paper. An order slip is provided on which you write the numbers corresponding to the ones you want. An English menu is also available.

Each plate comes with 2 pieces of sushi. You can clearly see the prices on the menu.

Tea is provided for free, and you can brew it yourself to the strength you prefer.

Even though you are expected to write your order, you are free to also pick up sushi plates from the belt at any point.

Reasonably priced, the seafood here is unbelievably fresh for a kaiten-zushi.

The most distinctive sushi at Nemuro Hanamaru are the Nisetai (二世帯) series. Nisetai refers to two layers. Each piece of sushi has two ingredients topped on the rice. These have a unique depth of flavor.
