Ban on public drinking on Halloween in Shibuya this year

halloween
Definitely not for the faint-hearted, Halloween at Tokyo's super popular Shibuya Scramble is crazy crowded.

Over a million people join the street party. Having said that, it's also the place where you see the most shockingly unique and eye-popping costumes. Since it is an unofficial event, Halloween celebrations begin usually around 27 October and go on till the 31st. Last year, there was a massive problem with a vehicle being toppled over resulting in commotion. To avoid such a situation, this year, the Shibuya ward office has decided to ban public drinking in Shibuya on the following dates: October 25, 26, 27, 31 for Halloween (as well as November 1, December 31 and January 1). Public spaces include parks, streets and public squares. Several restaurants have also decided to close early to avoid any mishaps and deal with crowds. (Source: Shibuya City Office)

You can still visit the Scramble to enjoy the big, free-for-all party. If you want to buy costumes to join this extravagant party, Tokyu Hands, Don Quijote sell a wide variety. These usually start at around 4000 yen!!

At the 100 yen shops, you can buy props like hats if you're not up for a crazy makeover!

One of our favorites from last year were these two as Starbucks drinks! After seeing these costumes, do you feel like stopping by just to watch the fun?

Please note that since the streets and shops are crowded, there are very few public toilets available.

It is easy to get lost in the crowds, so if you're traveling with family especially kids, it is best to avoid visiting Shibuya on these days. You can get an idea of the insanity by watching this video.
A great way to enjoy it is from the gantry between the JR Station and Mark City (Keio Inokashira Line). If you go away from the Scramble on to Dogenzaka or Spain Zaka, you can still get to see crazy outfits without having to deal with the crowds. Although the closest station is Shibuya, you might want to consider walking from Harajuku or Omotesando. *Photos in this feature are from November 2019*
