Located inside the department store connected to Kintetsu Nagoya Station, Nigiritate is a popular chain of onigiri (rice ball) specialty stores in Aichi prefecture. Their selling point is that the onigiri are always freshly made, which is also the meaning of it’s name Nigiritate! You can always enjoy a freshly made warm onigiri, as they are made individually after receiving the order. The menu features a wide variety of over 25 types including Nagoya gourmet tenmusu with a shrimp tempura inside, ume (Japanese pickled plum), salmon and mentaiko (spicy cod roe). There are also season-limited items, so definitely check it out when you are nearby.
Proud of Their Many Flavors!
The store always has a choice of about 30 different kinds of onigiri, made with a house-blend of rice using Akita-branded rice Akita Komachi. With so many choices to pick from, it’s great that the sizes are quite petite so that you can try different kinds.
The most popular menu item is dai-ebi-ten (150 yen), using taisho-ebi, known as one of the larger types of shrimp. It’s an impressive piece with the giant shrimp tempura so big it sticks out from the onigiri. The crunchy shrimp tempura is accompanied by a shiso leaf, giving it a characteristic fresh flavor.
Mehari with a Long Lasting Deliciousness
Another popular item is mehari (140 yen), a rice ball wrapped in a salted takana leaf (mustard leaf). The well salted leaf matches perfectly with the simple onigiri! The crunchy leaf wrapped around the freshly made, warm and delicious onigiri can be enjoyed even after some time passes.
