Owakudani is the most popular place among other tourist spots in Hakone. It is a valley at 1,000 meters above sea level which has belching steam from the crevices that were created by the latest volcanic activity. The famous local delicacy here is the kuro tamago (black egg) which is cooked by using the gas gushing out in Owakudani. You might be surprised to see it because it’s inky black but tastes excellent. You can enjoy the spectacular view of the scenery with Mt. Fuji in the background because of its high altitude.
You’ll be astonished to see white gas spurting out at various places in the valley which means the area is still volcanically active. It is impressive to see white steam gushing out of the mountain. Nice to take some interesting pictures!
To view Owakudani, another option is to take the Hakone Ropeway and pass over Owakudani than to get there on foot. You can enjoy the entire view of Owakudani. Hakone Ropeway runs between Sounzan Station and Togendai Station. You should check it out.
Gokuraku-jaya (Paradise Tea-house)
Kuro tamago is sold at Gokuraku-jaya, a tea house, is the most popular local delicacy. Eggs turn inky black by the chemical reaction of gas and geothermal heat from the valley. It is said that eating one kuro tamago will extend your life by seven years! If you want to eat to your heart’s content, the Gokuraku-don (paradise bowl), rice bowl with Ebi-ten (shrimp tempura) and a half-done egg on top is recommended.
