Shiratani Unsuikyo

Shiratani Unsuikyo is the primeval forest which covers an area of 424 hectares in the upper stream area of Shiratani river, a branch of Miyanoura river. The area around Shiratani river is full of trees with moss covering the ground, this is the certainly the feel of Yakushima forest. There are three courses which take from 1 hour to 4 hours, so you can choose the course that fits your schedule. Since this forest is a model of “Princess Mononoke” by studio Ghibli, many fans of Ghibli visit here.

Gigantic Yakusugi

In the easily accessible Shiratani Unsuikyo, there are some Yakusugi which are over 1,000 years. The largest Yayoi sugi is 3,000 years old and Hoko sugi is 2,000 years old. You can see unique cedars such as “Sanbonashi” sugi and “Sanbonyari” sugi.

A forest covered with moss which is a motif of Princess Mononoke

Shiratani Unsuikyo is a model of the forest in “Princess Mononoke” created by Studio Ghibli. This is a dark forest covered by trees and moss. So many wild Yakushima deer and Yakushima monkeys live in the forest. The director of studio Ghibli Miyazaki, Hayao Miyazaki visited this forest many times.

Taikoiwa, where you can look over the forest of Yakushima

From Taikoiwa, 1,050 meter above sea level, you can see Mt. Miyanouradake, Mt. Okudake, Kosugiya and Anbo river on a sunny day. You can look down the scenic view of Yakushima forest.
