Dogo Park is a prefectural park with lush greenery designated as a national historical site in Dogo area, Matsuyama. The park is the ruins of Yuzuki Castle where the Kono, the old local ruling clan, used to have a castle for about 250 years. The doubled moats and the bank called "dorui" that used to surround the castle remain as they used to be. There is the Yuzuki Castle Museum and the reconstructed old samurai residence on the site, from which you can learn about the prosperity at that time. Also, it is known as a beauty spot of cherry blossoms where 350 cherry trees bloom all over, and in spring, it gets crowded with many people wanting to see the blossoms.

The outer moat surrounds the park, and the inner moat surrounds the hill at the center of the park. Since this castle had been built before they started stonewalling castles, Dorui, the bank made of soil, still remains as it used to be surrounding the castle.

Observatory to Overlook the City of Matsuyama

The hill at the center of the park where the castle used to stand is an observatory to overlook Matsuyama city. It is a superb viewpoint: Dogo Onsengai (hot spring town) is on the north side, the urban area is on the west side, the suburbs of Matsuyama is on the south, and you can see Matsuyama Castle. The night view is lovely, too, which not many people know.
