With nothing to obstruct the view, one can find the vast rolling hills dyed in light purple by the breathtaking lavender fields of Furano. The cultivation of these fields began in 1937, when a Japanese perfume company received lavender seeds from France. However, when imports and synthetic perfumes eventually dropped in price, the cultivation of lavender was terminated. Luckily, just around that time, the lavender fields in Naka Furano were gaining popularity all over Japan as a beautiful tourist location, so the area was revived as the Furano lavender fields gained more and more appreciation. Here, you can enjoy the lavender fields for free!
The earliest flowers begin to bloom around the end of June and the whole area is dyed purple in full bloom from around mid to late July.
1. The Original Lavender Field of Furano (Traditional Lavender Farm)
If you’re going to the lavender fields of Furnano, then you should definitely stop by Farm Tomita. This is Furano’s representative spot so in the peak season it becomes extremely crowded. When you go, try to aim for a weekday or visit early in the morning. This is the oldest lavender field in Japan, and also where the Furano Lavender Fields were first introduced nationwide when its picture was used in a calendar for Japan’s national railway.
After climbing to the top of the fields, the purple-dyed sloping hill spreads below revealing views of the rolling countryside dotted by farms and houses and the epic Tokachidake Mountain Range in the distance.
2. The Most Famous Lavender Field in Furano!
For all of those who have thought, “I want to go see the lavender fields of Furano!” it’s probably due to pictures of Farm Tomita’s most famous field, “Irodori no Hatake.” Just take a look! The beauty!
A beautiful, seven-colored rainbow is made by flowers like purple lavender, white baby’s breath, red poppies, pink garden catchflies that grow across the gentle sloping hill. This is undoubtedly the number one spot for pictures in the Furano lavender fields.
After taking some great pictures, take a walk through the fields. Be sure not to step on the flowers and stay on the small designated path. You’ll feel like you’re walking through the flower fields of heaven!
After that head to the very top of the fields and take a look down! On the other side of the rainbow colored fields, you can see the whole of Furano.
3. Furano Choei Lavender Garden
After enjoying Farm Tomita to one’s heart’s content, head to the Naka Furano Choei Lavender Garden located within walking distance. Here also you will find lavender and other beautiful, colored flowers that make for remarkable views.
The greatest feature here is riding the lift to see the lavender growing from the sides of the mountain. Because this area is also used as a ski resort in winter, we can enjoy this special treat. Please enjoy the exhilarating view!
4. One of Japan’s Largest Lavender Fields
Here, we’ve been introducing the Farm Tomita central area located within walking distance to JF Hokkaido Lavender Station, but for those who want to see more, take a 7-min taxi ride to Farm Tomita East. Here you will find yourself in one of the largest lavender fields in all of Japan. Because of its expansive size, one can also tour the area by bus.
Lavender-colored ice cream is sold in the cafe and shop located in Farm Tomita. The ice cream has extracts of lavender for a refreshing taste. It goes perfect with early summer!
